SKH views coaching as being essentially a partnership. The coach brings another perspective which stimulates new ideas and awareness, and provides support in making important behavior changes. Reciprocally, the coach needs to work with the situation at hand (organizational needs, requirements and expectations), and help the individual manager/leader achieve goals that are relevant to his/her personal and organizational success.

A coach sits outside an individual’s culture, and is likely to have a different framework for viewing and analyzing issues. For this same reason, coaching offers a unique opportunity to be transparent and honest without the fear of being evaluated or judged. This makes it easier to test new ways of thinking and various approaches to dealing with challenges.

Coaching can be employed at any point in an individual’s career, but there are probably critical transitions where coaching is particularly helpful. New managers face a whole new set of challenges and opportunities that are difficult to be fully prepared for. Being a leader involves greater potential to impact others and the organization, but also comes with more scrutiny and a need for greater self-awareness. As managers progress in their careers they sometimes face large changes in the scope and scale in their responsibilities, and coaching can help accelerate adaptation to this new set of challenges. A corollary is that promotions in general can sometimes render previously effective behaviors counter-productive and require significant adjustments.

Coaching is also a useful tool when people with strong technical expertise aren’t fully realizing their potential because of difficulties with interpersonal effectiveness. Many workplaces today require solid collaboration and teamwork skills, and coaching can support development of these competencies.
